Trivial Stuff

YOU'D NEVER KNOW IT, BUT...

1.  There are four things I put in every one of my novels:
  • A horse
  • An old (and wise) person
  • A British accent
  • A Beatles reference
These may or may not play major roles in any given story, but they're always present, even in passing.

        -----------------------------

2. I like to read grammar books for fun. Seriously. I've embraced this inner geek and am perfectly capable of making fun of myself.  I do know how to define a dangling gerund--even though that makes me an outcast in some circles.

          ----------------------------

3. I'm a HUGE fan of "Dr. Who." I've been watching it since they started showing it in the US back in the seventies with the first of the, now, eleven Doctors. For those who know what I'm talking about my favorite Doctor is Tom Baker (who's isn't?), and 2005's Christopher Eccleston followed by sweet and lovely David Tennant. Still, I've developed a little crush on the newest Doctor, Matt Smith, too.

---------------------------

4. I'm also a big fan of the old series "Have Gun Will Travel."  It's odd to those who know I'm not a gun lover, but Paladin, the show's star, is the perfect Hero, especially when he solves problems without ever taking his Colt from its holster (most of the time, in fact). He's an alpha male who can quote Shakespeare and Milton, can judge wine and equestrian competitions, speaks French, Greek, Japanese, several American Indian dialects, and Romanian, yet he can kick bad-guy butt without any trouble if need be.

-----------------------------

5. In four of my spare Novembers I've participated in NaNoWriMo (aka National Novel Writing Month). Writing 50,000 words in 30 days either makes you loony, or gives you a great start on a book. The Rancher and the Rock Star is a NaNo novel.

6.
I admit it. I like the current judges on American Idol. I think Steven Tyler is adorable if  weird,  and I really believe JLo is one of the most beautiful women in the world. There. I said it.

Travel

MY GREATEST INSPIRATIONS

My favorite story ideas come from the places I've lived. Bremen, Germany; Toronto, Canada; Wilhelmshaven, Germany; and Anchorage, Alaska are places I've been lucky to call home at different times in my life.  Nothing feeds a writer's soul like a new adventure.  Here's a peek at a few of the incredibly inspirational places God has allowed me to see "up close and personal."

*****************************************

ALASKA
My loved and exquisite, adopted state.

Breathtaking Denali--Mount McKinley to "Outsiders."

Beautiful glacier ice at Child's Glacier in Cordova

The ubiquitous and amazing Alaskan moose.

Sitting atop mountains is -ahem - "easy" to do in Alaska -- this is Penguin Peak overlooking Turnagain Arm near Anchorage.

MINNESOTA
My gorgeous home state!

This is the North Shore of Lake Superior. Always stunning.

Palisade Head is a haven for rock climbers. See the guy sitting on the ledge? I like walking on the edges but I wouldn't go over them!

Devil's Kettle Falls in Judge Magney State Park. See how the left-hand falls disappears into the Devil's Hole? You can never see where it comes out--they say it disappears forever.

Gooseberry Falls -- at Gooseberry Falls State Park. There's a reason we're a state famous for water!

We have quiet, peaceful water too. This might be the State Park in The Rancher & The Rock Star, where Abby learns to trust Elliott.

Minnesota does have moose--but our truly ubiquitous animal is the shy White-tailed deer. Getting a good picture of one is tough.
